Why is it too late to plant leeks now, what growing conditions do they need?

It's not too late Jay. I planted my last row two days ago. But much later than this and they'll not really make maximum growth before winter.
Leeks need a fairly long growing season. Don't let them get too dry at an early stage or they'll bolt and feed them later if you want really big ones.

There's no such thing as a daft question. Only daft answers!

Possibly best to start them off indoors. I tried to outdoors, and they've taken forever to get going.

Erm, I plant out my leeks in July [IMG] ! But have overwintering varietiy (Yates Empire) for the hungry gap (they last til end April), so maybe that's why I get away with planting out later?
