Is it too late to take dahlia cuttings? And do they follow true to the donor plant, and finally will they develop tubers before winter?

There is a lovely 'berries and cream' style one at work that I am tempted to whip a cutting or three from as I really like it.

Its probably a bit late, but if you keep the plant in a pot this year you should get a reasonable sized tuber to overwinter I would guess.

Oh, and yes, they come true to type.

Champion! I will be out with the scissors tomorrow.

I'll happily keep it in a pot this year just to get a tuber for next year :)

      Thanks @pete

I took a cutting from one of Sues last October and I kept it in water until March (I think) at which point I potted it up. It was a leggy stem (with lots of roots) but since going into soil it has romped away and has its first flower buds.

I have taken cuttings late in the year, and kept them in pots in conservatory over winter - they kept their foliage, so I wasn't worried about size of tubers etc.

Conservatory was only frost free, but in fairness would have rarely got near to freezing, maybe only 1 or 2 nights of the year, so better to think of it being Min 5C

Either way, I would bring them on as much as possible, under cover, before planting out.
