I have recently been looking through some books and noticed how beautiful Dahlias are, would it be possible to grow these in containers and if so would i achieve the same results as planting in the ground ?

Sorry if this question seems a bit amateur !! but thats exactly what i am !!

Ive grown them both ways and not noticed much difference in the plants either way to be honest my container grown ones were probably better because my soil in the border was quite poor. just make sure u keep them well watered in summer if in pots :) mine will all b in pots next summer alot easier than lifting the tubers from the ground too

I will be keeping all my dahlias in planters from next year, I find you can protect them better from slugs with copper tape. I grew them on this year to strong sturdy plants, but as soon as i planted them out they were just slug fodder.[IMG]

I have a square planter with 6 mixed Dahlias in that were in 2" square cells in June. They are very happy and have no slugs or snails amongst them. They need a heck of a lot of water - twice a day and are prone to keeling over when the wind takes them and they are light - in need of a drink.
Full of bumble bees all the time which is a great bonus,
        Jenny

I've got Dahlias in containers and they are looking great at the moment :blue thumb:

I haven't found they need watering any more frequently than my other container plants, but I only have one Dahlia plant per 50cm container.

The Dahlias I kept in pots have done much better than the same varieties planted in the soil this year. I haven't taken much care of them either, just a little water when I remember. Next year I'm think of keeping them all in pots, it will save the faff of digging them up for over-wintering too.

That was my plan too John, when the frost has blackened them I will lift them up and dry them in the greenhouse , was thinking of having my pots ready then popping them in to a pot with dried out compost ?? back under staging till next year.

My tray of 6 plants only cost £3.50 from my local Nursery so I think I'll buy fresh ones again next year and have some Spring bedding in the planter until May/June,

Thank you Sheal, they are a later garden feature but will give 3 months worth of display and I find dead heading dahlias a lot easier than many other garden plants. A good value for money feature I think,
