Hello - just thought I'd post a few pics when we stopped on the moor on Saturday for a picnic. It was a beautifully hot day, but a good breeze made it comfortable.

These are taken on the Yelverton to Princetown road. (Princetown is where the Prison is). The views are extensive in all directions and the capacity to walk anywhere, in any direction, is virtually unhindered (except on the military ranges!)

Then suddenly, over the brow of the hill....

A watering at the local pool....

    more to come...

Nothing beats a good roll after a long drink...

    Then a big shake ...

They take their lives in their hands every day crossomg the Dartmoor roads.... There is meant to be a 40 mph max speed limit but this is rarely observed or enforced and there are many horse, sheep and cattle - not to mention human - casualties every year - especially now at foaling time.

then off they wander in their free roaming of the moor..

Thanks Inter - yes it was a beautiful day - lovely scenery and great company! Mr Cookie's mum came down for her birthday and this was her B'day picnic! Mini sausage rolls, pork pielets, fairy cakes and pringles with champers (and coke for me as the driver!). We all had a fab time. All very healthy fresh air - shame about the unhealthy diet!!! The Dartmoor ponies were an unexpected treat as they were nowhere around when we first pulled in.

Hi Nutty - is there any where those muscley calves have not peddled you!!!!???

If your legs get a hankering to come down south again, look me up and see how your seeds are getting on :thumb:

You are right about the moors - they have to be respected as the weather can turn from one extreme to another - and it is quite rare to have total visibility. However, these past few days they have been like a sleeping beast and there has been wall to wall sunshine. This weekend just gone saw the Ten Tors Competion - groups of young hikers do a route around the Moor taking in 10 of the Tors for charity. We drove past some very hot looking youngsters and gave them a cheer to help them along! There were lots of helicopters flying over the moor to keep an eye on anyone having difficulties. Last year it was abandoned because the weather was so bad!

Yes, thanks Coub. I grew up a city girl in Liverpool and fell in love with Devon the first time I came down here to do some lambing. I love the Isle of Man too, but think a small island is a bit insular to live on, full-time.

The moors, hills, reservoirs, rivers and having the sea so close makes South Devon paradise for me. Lots of wildlife and far reaching views.

    Nice! :)

I have read about lots of people who have come to the moor on a visit and have ended up coming here to live. Alan Lee, the guy who does the fantastic J.R.R.Tolkien artwork and was consultant to Peter Jackson for the Trilogy films, lives on Dartmoor and takes a lot of inspiration for his visions of The Shire.
