    Good Morning all,
Found a dead bat yesterday behind my house, in the exact same spot as I found another dead one a few weeks ago :( It looked okay but had a broken ear, whereas the other one looked fine - but dead! What's going wrong with them? I have a suspicion that they're nesting in my roof-space, but 2 in a few weeks has got me worried. :( :(

I love bats. I would contact the Bat Conservation Trust, Windy, because something definitely seems amiss there. Were they babies?

Did you know you should wear gloves handling bats ... they have been known to carry a strain of rabies, but obviously these two couldn't bit you!

Read the following, but I would make a call ...

    Macleaf - :D :D :D

L-o-L, Thanks for that great link. After looking at it I've found they're brown long-eared bats, and going off the sizes I'd say they're adults. But seen as I'd never seen a bat til I found the first one,I could be wrong! My youngest has been talking about noises in her walls at night so I now suspect they could live in my house - how cool is that?!! [IMG]
Have e-mailed them so will let you know the outcome.
Thanks again, I'm going to try and see them now I know they're there. [IMG]

Looking forward to hearing what they say, Windy.

How neat, having them in your house ... we only have them flying around here but don't know where they live. [IMG]

Yes, it's an interesting site, possibly for the kids as well but not knowing their ages, this may also be of interest to them ...

I'm hoping that they're living in my house [IMG] LoL. My 5year old has been saying she heard noises from the walls at night for ages, but I just thought it was her imagination until I heard it late one night too [IMG] Oh I hope it's bats and I hope that there's nothing wrong with them [IMG] because I it'd be heartbreaking to keep finding them dead :(

    *UPDATE*
The bat helpline said that long eared bats land on the ground so could well be my cats that have brought about their early demise :( Apparently, it's often very difficult to see signs of injuries on them (bats not cats - though I could injure my cats when they do things like this!) To see if they're living in my house I've to look for droppings where I think they're roosting. They look like mouse poo but if you rub them between your fingers, unlike mouse poo they will turn to dust  To be honest, think I'll leave the broken slate as it is leave them well alone and take a lot more notice when I'm doing my late night slug-hunts, and hopefully I'll see them.
Thanks for the links LoL, my youngest loved the kids one and is really pleased they may live in her wall. [IMG]

That was a quick and positive response from the bat org an hopefully you find their home.

Shame if it was your cats, but that's their nature. Mine brought a dead mouse for the two little 'uns the other day ... put it with their toys! Since then he's brought them two live geckos! Fortunately mine doesn't eat anything he catches!

Glad the kids like the link ... it's good for them to learn about such things. [IMG]

    Keep us posted!

We're lucky enough to have bats here too, Windy - but we're trying to encourage them to live in the garage, rather than the house..... It's pipistrelles here - we see them every evening silhouetted against the skyline as it's getting dark. That's the best time to spot them, while they're flitting about getting insects.

In case anyone's wondering, we don't have any living here yet - we just want to encourage it! :D
