Unless you want to grow for seed then dead head and you may be lucky and get another flush in the autumn. They won't be as big but they're still worth having.

They are hardy perenials so you can leave them in the ground overwinter and they will flower again next year.

Just remove the complete flower spike near to ground level once it's finished flowering (unless it already has side branches bearing buds) They like to be kept moist but not waterlogged and a weekly balanced feed won't do them any harm during growth and flowering.

I've just planted out some small plants grown from seed last year- I'm always scared to put them out incase they disappear overnight courtesy of the slugs- so far they're surviving. Also planted out a bigger clump thats been growing in a pot for 3years. The pot ones are all beautiful dark blue/ violet bicolours grown from seeds from my last garden, the little ones will be mixed colours, I expect. Lovely plants, I always cut the first flower spikes off to get a second flush, just leaving 1or 2 for seeds. I've got some baby ones with ferny leaves and much more spaced out flowers [I think they're called butterfly], slugs love them, scared to put them out!
Think i might try some big ones as well, these only grow to 3-4'.

Slugs ate all mine - well most of them year before last, I got a load more - 50p from local nursery then all others came back. One of them is very strange, it first flowers wjite then pale blue then delphimium blue then pink - not sure I like it really as it does not seem to know what it is.

Yes I always cut mine back and have had them flower nearly up to Christmas in a good year.
