I am a complete novice to gardening - I managed last year to create half of my dream of a cottage garden from seed but I really want to grow delphinuims from seed. I planted them straight out last year. TodayI have just planted the seeds in a seed tray indoors until they germinate. Is this correct?

That's certainly what I've done!! Put a clear plastic lid over it, or a poly bag, to keep it moist, and wait!! Mine came up quite quickly. Good luck! ;)

hello, i tried them last year in the gh, (i had soil on each side of floor then)and ended up with chickweed!i`d put manure in first so think that might have been the cause.the other allotment holders had a good laugh at my expense.

I think you give any seed a far higher chance of survival if you sow in a tray and then pot it up before putting it in the ground.

I agree. If you have any slugs or snails around they will make a beeline for new seedlings and even first and second year plants. When you plant them out protect them with grit or pellets or copper wire, or all three!

I agree Liz - they love delphs. If you can get them more mature, the slugs are less of a problem, but protect as much as possible against snails. Mine will insist on chewing through the flower spike - one minute glorious stem of buds or even blooms - next day, collapsed thanks to snails snipping through the stem
