This may seem strange, but for the last few months I have not been able to purchase deodorant / anti-bacterial soaps (Fa, Rightguard etc) here in the Algarve, be it from the hypermarkets or stores selling miscellaneous items (equivalents to Wilkinson's and such like).

I know there has been an issue regarding Triclosan in soaps, deodorants, toothpastes, cleaning products, etc, but does anyone know if there is a ban? Are they still available in the UK?

I have posted this query on one of the national expat forums so I will be interested to see if I get any response and will let you know if I do.

Thanks in advance for any thoughts / comments.

Not heard of anything here. We've still bought both items in both the supermarket and Wilkinson's with no bother.

Soooo, does that mean everyone now is going 'au naturel' on the Algarve? :)

Well it seems Triclosan is banned as it is cancerous as you say, but I just looked when I was out & I found Shield soap & looked at the ingredients & it seems triclocarbon is allowed now instead..
You can still buy Lifebouy soap too & Wrights coal tar etc here so why the Algarve has decided no I am not sure..
You can buy Lifbouy here & mail order along with Shield & Dial soap so maybe that would be a better way for you all out there, we can get them mail order here so I imagine you can too...

:euw: Aaron, I hope not, I like fresh and clean. Actually, the Portuguese are very 'fresh smelling' in general. Shall I do a survey of 'and what soap do you use?' .... :hehe:

:) Thanks for that link, roders, rather interesting all the products mentioned. ... J-Cloths? I am painting with them at the moment .... :help:

Marley, think I've got it figured out now. So far we have friends coming out three / four times this summer to the Algarve (first lot arrive 1 April) ... so I shall ask each lot to bring me a half a dozen bars of Fa soap (Caribbean Lemon, Green or Blue NOT sickly fruity) which we have used for 15-20 years and then I'll be stocked up again .... :yho: I'll stick to my glycerine/honey soaps for my face, occasionally Dove.

Not much luck on the Portuguese forums ... one lady (Portuguese) suggests Alum crystals ... perhaps she misunderstood I wanted certain products .... :flag:

Thanks for the input guys .. nice to have friends back there to help out in a time of crisis. :luv:

Dear you require a care package sent out with toiletries (we do it for an ex-pat in Texas who misses proper teabags!)?

There's a hell of a lot of products on that list which could be dodgy, including some I use - Merrell Trainers. My favourite pair of shoes at the moment, even though I've had them for years...

Dear Aaron ... only if you and OH bring the care package yourselves .... :luv:

Watch out for your feet .. you only get one pair of them in your life .... :flag:

    Dave, bless you ... :luv:

However, I have some good news ... for me, at least, and anyone who gets 'up close and personal' with me. I managed to get Fa solid soap in Makro today at only 60c (incl IVA) per 125g bar. There was a limited supply and only the lemon, which happens to be my favourite, so I got a dozen bars. :yho:

I think I'm missing something here.
I don't know why people need "deoderants" and "antibacterials"
I thought a daily wash with soap and water did the job.

Put it this way. If I commute to work on the motorbike, in full leathers, in the height of summer, without deodorant, my work colleagues might have something to say. Yes, I do have a shower at least once a day.

However, a few years ago, I wasnt working for a month (was arranging a move from Edinburgh to London) and during that time I didn't bother with it, so yes, a daily wash did fine.

Alice, I bathe daily (and it is the solid soap I was referring to) but use an anti-perspirant following as I like to keep dry and fresh all day.
