I'm to start building a raised veg bed which will be 15-18 tall from the ground..straight onto grass. I'll remove the turf and stack away for loam of course, is there any benefit of digging the ground underneath this, and how deep should I go...what is the best depth for an all round veg bed?

    Many thanks.

    Steve...:)

Well Parsnips go about the deepest, maybe leeks too, at about 12-18 inches Steve, so unless you are going to grow some thing that goes deeper I think you should be ok, but I maybe inclined to break the soil up a bit after you have removed the turf & then fill on top of that with well rotted manure & soil... That is just my opinion though Steve.. Only got 2 raised beds, both are 20" deep as that is the way they turned out.:dh:

Thanks Marley, I'll turn over one spit then and add everything and mix which should give me a depth of 2 foot or 20-22 inches when settled...room to mulch.
