That's a fault with your server. Report it to the tech help number and get their advice. It started happening to me on and off which is why I ended up going broadband!

If you are on broadband you should not dial up - its always on.
Have you still got your dial up modem plugged into the phone line?
I was on Tiscali broadband and they sent me threatening letters cause they said we were using it too much, even though we were unlimited. I complained to Ofcom? and was more or less told "what can you expect from such a comany?" Speed was rubbish so I changed to a decent company. Now pay a bit more for Demon but I get proper broadband which is loads faster than Tiscali was. Tiscali was just shoving loads of new customers on without investing in new capacity.

Hi Macleaf, this used to happen to us a lot when we first changed to broadband. We tried everything to cancel it in the modem/connections settings but with no luck. In the end eldest reset the computer and didn't install dial up. Haven't seen it since; but a little drastic I think.

I've found that to be a bit of a misnomer in reality! Tis true the 'connection' is always there to your residence but your computer still has to connect and disconnect every time you switch it on and off!

And anyway, the problem is still with your server!

Also, about servers, I have TalkTalk which, though it's had a lot of bad press, I've been very happy with and with the customer service and tech support. And with the phone and landline package that I already had, it's free with a pretty substantial download cap - more than I'm ever likely to use. Can't get much better than that, IMO!

I don't think you do - the connection to the ISP is always on. I have never had to connect to a server when I switch on any computer. The only server that I have to connect to is the one handling E-mail.
When I have brought a laptop home even though all the computers were switched off and the laptop had never used my home connection before I just plugged it in and was surfing the net straight away - no dialing up, password exchange or anything.
In fact if you have wireless you need to be sure that it is secure. When installing the bits that go in the computer I have to type in a number that is on the router. My son's laptop came with wireless capability built in and we had to type the same number in. Otherwise someone else can use your Internet connection - it does happen quite a lot.

Just a thought - have you still got your
    old dial up software installed?

just a small note: its not your server macleaf. its your internet settings. more than likley its the settings in your web browser that is causing the problem. if you are using ie7.....go to tools...internet settings.......then click on the connection settings on the tab....here you will see a box with dial up connections in it....if there is then remove them by highlighting them and clicking on remove. also note that underneath the box there are 3 options...if your broadband then "never dial a connection should be highlighted...then clcik ok.

    let me know what happens..

    Hi PCMedic,
I've been having this problem too and took your advice. If I highlight "never dial a connection" I can't get online.
What have I done wrong????? [IMG]

I still get my dail-up connection dialogue box come on when I go to IE. If it doesn't then I'm not connected. When it's done its stuff, I get the "TalkTalk connection is now at 1.2mb" (Or something like) balloon and the two little computers.

Well, I can't say I am very impressed with TalkTalk at the moment MD!!! [IMG]

I ordered Broadband 16th November, was promised installation and delivery of modem by
    21st December.
Nice, I thought, just in time for Christmas -- but it didn't arrive.

Several very long phone calls to try to sort it out, latest one this afternoon and
I am now promised in 7 days time.

    Looking forward to 24th January
