I’ve grown some dianthus from seed and am wondering if I should pinch them out and if so when. I’ve potted them on and they’re growing slowly but surely. They’re about 10cm tall and several sets of true leaves.

Am really pleased as I couldn’t follow any of the growing advice as I don’t buy in seed compost, grit, perlite etc so they just had to have a go in my own garden soil in the cold greenhouse.

Normal soil is ok to grow in, I have a garden full of the stuff!. Seed composts and additives are fine, but it gets expensive trying to nurture plants that'll grow happily without too much mollycoddling. I start some stuff in cotton balls, it gives them a leg up before bunging them out to fend for themselves

I have grown Dianthus Sweetness in the past and they shouldn't need pinching out. They are very lovely. The other one which is very nice is Baby Doll.

@flounder can you please explain more how you use cotton wool balls? In pots? Plastic bags? Probably needs a new thread...

I'll start a thread later today explaining how I use them, it's pretty similar to the kitchen towel method of seed germination
