Didn't think it was possible

    This Musa Basjoo flower seems to have overwintered without dieing or being cut back.
    Its been totally unprotected and endured at least a couple of nights of minus 5C and plenty of minus 2 & 3s.

    Didn't even notice it until I removed the dead leaves from last year.

    Borrowers, I'm afraid that is the flower.
    Can you make out the small immature bananas, with the yellow flowers on the ends.:)

    What kind of size are they - it's difficult to get a sense of perspective in the pic (fab shot though by the way! - How high up are they?)

    Hi jarbax, its in a clump of stems, about seven foot up.
    I tend to leave the old dead leaves on all winter, it looks awful, but I can only guess they have kept the worst of the frost from the bud.

    Paladin I have seen photos of them flowering as far north as Liverpool, so it can be done oop north

    Pete just today my beloved Bob brought me two of those plants, fingers crossed they will survive here on the derbyshire/yorkshire border because by heck it gets cold up here!:eek: Hel.xxx.

    Then perhaps a bit of winter protection might be a good idea, but even if you dont, if its basjoo, I think it will come good from the ground again.

    Not really, I'm hoping it gets better as the weather improves, its looking a bit tatty at the moment.
