I have a Dierama pulcherrimum in my garden. (Wand flower, Venus' fishing rod). In its first and second year it flowered well. In the third year it did not flower at all. Last spring I cut it back to see what would happen and I had the best show of flowers so far.

Can anyone tell me if the leaves should be cut back each spring, or was it just coincidence last year and would have flowered anyway?

    Cheers.

Hi Revnick, and welcome to the site. Dierama are only semi-evergreen, so I don`t see a problem with cutting it back. Especially if you had such good results last year.

Thanks. I will cut them back this week. They produce such elegant flower stems and look great arching over our small pond.
