It took me over 40 years to buy my first diesel engined car . My formative car years were when diesels were smelly slow and rattly ! Now after 18 months of driving one , I absolutely love it . The dark cloud on the horizon is that diesel is not the friendly eco fuel it once was , and over 25 cities are considering controls on its use. The press and TV are doing the usual hysterical reporting , this is the worse thing since bubonic plague and diesel cars will have a rock bottom resale value.
What is the opinion on the diesel future , would you buy a diesel car in the next few months ?

I wouldn't buy any diesel designed to meet the emissions targets of the last 10/15 years. Whilst they're fantastic to drive with a seemingly endless wall of torque they are dearer to maintain/repair than petrol engines and less reliable unless they're doing a lot of motorway mileage.Modern petrol engines are almost as economical too.
This latest hysteria about their emissions will almost certainly hit their resale values but that should be reflected in the discounts available on new cars.

Funny the lorrys with there big diesel engines are cleaner than car engines , i don't think the diesel engine is for the scarp heap yet as the world runs on diesels, ie: lorrys and ships

Thats government propaganda...As an example, Euro 6 Carbon Monoxide emissions for a diesel car is 0,5. For a heavy lorry, 1,5...3x as much. Its worth noting that diesel locomotives, farm tractors and other off highway vehicles have not been subject to any emission regulations.

It seems to slowly be being made clearer that it is only the older diesels, Euro 4 and older that are really being targetted; this will of course eventually rise to include Euro 5, but even then the diesels being sold for the past couple of years are Euro 6. Sadly, even our Euro 6 cars will be taking a hit in value thanks to the propaganda machine.

Makes me want to buy something with a nice big petrol lump, turbocharged preferably, just for the hell of it. I can't afford to, however.

Well, just wait until the Government wants to change over completely to directly to Electric driven cars and then you'll find that the "nice big petrol lump" you managed to buy is being "demonised" just like the Diesel is being demonised today. London is to get a £12.50 day charge/penalty on top of the congestion charge on the pretext of gaining cleaner air but a lot of people seem to see it as another way to gain revenue while professing it's in a good cause.:dunno::coffee::snorky:

I'm, at the moment, buying a car for Mrs Shiney. My main criteria, amongst many others, was definitely not diesel.

This problem has been in the offing for a few years now and has been noticeable by the increase in diesel prices at the pumps compared with the increase in petrol. Also, the scare stories that have been around since the EU has been putting more and more stringent regulations on air quality in cities has made it more obvious. Also, the publicity about the dangers of NOX will certainly have an effect on the type of car people buy.

Over the last five years I warned some friends, and my sister, against buying diesel cars but to no avail. I know virtually nothing about cars but do know a lot about finance and how the markets move. If the cities bring in penalties for diesel cars, or ban them altogether, without any transitional allowance from the government or dispensation for diesel cars already on the road, there will be political uproar.

The only rescue I see for the future of diesel engines is for the manufacturers to clean up their act - and the emissions.

Apart from the fact that I'm sensitive to diesel fumes Mrs Shiney has had many patients that are very badly affected by the particles in the air. Some of them have had to move from London to the countryside to avoid being permanently on medication for it.

Whatever you buy, if the masses also buy it, they will tax it on green grounds.

Probably steam power is the way to go, especially if you use wood rather than coal, as wood is the environmentally friendly way to go, being a sustainable fuel.:lunapic 130165696578242 5:
That is of course until we all start using it.;)

Naaah, pete:nonofinger::doh::snorky:, wood releases air pollutants like Benzene, Formaldyde, acrolein and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, when burnt, into the air.:dunno:

Yep, but if you are the only one doing it, it aint worth taxing ;)

                      Off topic, sorry.

Bearing in mind the amount of people I know that have now gone over to wood burning stoves for house heating, it wont be long before we go back to the days of smog from house fires.

Many years ago petrol was bad as it was very heavy with all the lead in it, so if they can clean up petrol they can clean up diesel

It's because Lorries are tested on the road under real conditions whereas cars are tested in laboratories by 'scientists'. We all know how easy it was for the likes of VW to fool the 'scientists' under non-real world conditions by fiddling their engine computers.
