I'm working on a colour wheel, where each growing area contains a certain colour of plant, preferably so there'll be colour all year round or at least most of the year. Green is easy, the other colours of the rainbow I'm finding difficult. Here's what I tried so far:

red – nasturtiums sprawled all over, do all nasturtiums grow this way? I need compact plants so the colours are separate. Poppies looked pretty although you only get the red through a small amount of the year.Asparagus peas did not grow

Orange – my calendula are orange-yellow, they look nice. More plants to add to this colour slot would be good

yellow – I grew rocket; the flowers are tiny and most of the plant is green and way too big

blue – cornflowers did not grow :-( why could this be? Borage was too tall and sprawling

    pink – any ideas?

Purple – I only have a small area here. The pansies died

I need compact, lowish growing plants, able to live in a windy part of Leeds, with as much of their certain colour as possible. I imagined bulbs would be good during spring.

    Bonus points for:
    edibles
    benefits for wildlife
    not tasty for slugs
the correct colour leaves, not just flowers

    please can you help?
