Last year someone was selling some nice ceramic pots locally so we purchased them and went to pick them up.
They asked if we wanted their blow away greenhouse (large) for nothing so we took it home. First one we have had and when we assembled it the plastic was going white in places & cracked. Done some repairs with araldite, screwed a metal eye into concrete and held the bottom down with a plastic tie. Same with the back, 2 plastic ties going from g/house to fence. Had no problem with it blowing away as it was secured down well + heavy pots on bottom.
5 mins ago my wife said it has blown over with about 15 geranium & fuchsia pots in it!! The rotten plastic frame had finally given up the ghost so we had to carefully get the pots out and only one had to be repotted.
Trouble is we had to put them back into greenhouse on the floor which is overflowing with plants at the moment. The only way to water anything now is to take the pots out, water then put them back. The other problem is in a few weeks we have another load of plants to put in greenhouse ready to grow on!!

With these blow away greenhouses they are ok but do not last long, besides they are only in use with us for say 4-6 weeks then we pack it up and put it away to save any more deterioration. Ideally I would like to build a wooden grow house with polycarbonate walls but make it in a way it can be disassembled.

bad luck Trogre, perhaps in a few weeks it will be warm enough for the new arrivals outdoors, in a sheltered spot?, until you get time to build a growhouse.:dbgrtmb:

That was the sort of troubles I was having with the polytunnels, and in the end it spurred me to buy a greenhouse. No comparison between the two.

Hope everything survives until you get something sorted.

      Hi trogre

I had the same issue with the blow away tomato houses last year so I have built a wooden one ( not quite finished yet though). You would be able to make it to take apart by making it in separate panels and then drill through 2 and bolt them together. I personally think that it would be a right faff putting it up and taking it down every year though. I also have a 4 tiered blow away that I use for putting seedling in to start hardening them off, the cover on this is now knackered, so after I have finished the one I am doing at the moment I am going to to build a wooden and polycarbonate frame for this and then when seedlings moved out I can put a tomato plant in there.

Got home from the football yesterday to find my greenhouse has blown across the garden with all tomato, pepper, chilli and courgette plants scattered in between :( (greenhouse has plastic type skin on it not a glass one!)

Is it too late to start some new plants off from seed or is it worth buying small plants?

James, I am so sorry for you. All that work and effort. I have heard so many tales from other distraught GC members where it has happened to them.
Salvage what you can AND most importantly, lessons learned and all that, make sure the GH is securely tethered. Good luck and :sign0016:to Gardeners Corner,
      Jenny

Unlucky James , but you should be able to save some of the plants . Collect what you can and repot them , they will soon recover. If not then I would buy small plants , Chilli plants are quite a popular plant in GC's now , and tom plants are very easy to buy.
PS: hope your team won, so the day wasn't a complete disaster :blue thumb:

Just waiting for it to happen ( again) to me ..I gave in and bought a cheapo plastic thing .. But , I am now going to see if I can save up for one next year. I know it will need a good base and someone to do the work... Going to be busy trying to save some money me thinks :lunapic 130165696578242 5:

      Welcome to GC James :sign0016:

Where in the world are you? If you are near to me, I am willing to donate some tomato plants, and might well have a few chilli & pepper plants too - can't help with the courgettes of cucumbers, sorry, however given that they germinate and grow at a rate of knots I think you have time to re-sow.

Thanks very much for the offer, I am based in Brighton. Managed however to get myself to a car boot sale yesterday and purchased some plants there along with other pots and planters :)

          Glad you got sorted :)

Hopefully we will get to see pics of your garden and plants throughout the year - you'll like it here, very friendly forum, and a good dose of daftness thrown in

Hello and welcome. Sorry it went a bit wrong for you. Sounds like your mishap was worse than my one. I don't know about your other plants but there's still plenty of time to start courgettes from seed again.

As if things couldn't get worse!

Have spent this evening doing exactly the same as Saturday. All the plants I got at the car boot sale have been spread over the garden and the plastic greenhouse is destroyed. I had even managed to secure it to an outside wall and was bricked down. Gutted.

They're a bit susceptible aren't they? I ended up dismantling mine when gales were forecast, moved all the big pots that were overwintering, wrapped up the plants and then re-assembled it afterwards:gaah: Even with heavy planks and concrete blocks holding down the edges, they don't resist wind. Don't lose heart, James.....third time lucky. There's still time to get plants established and you'll probably end up with a bumper crop to make up for all the early hassle:)
