    Hi Everyone

Just joined and this is my first post so I hope someone can help me.
The mature sweet chestnut in my front garden has a strip of bark missing about 4 metres up the trunk, and the exposed wood has hundreds of small holes a bit like woodworm. Also about 2 metres up the trunk is an old knot which has rotted into the trunk about to about a third of the depth. Again, the same holes are evident. Last year the ends of the branches did not leaf and few chestnuts were produced. As the tree leans over the road I am concerned that it may break at the knot and fall on the road.
Can you please advise me what the problem might be, and the solution, if any?
    Many thanks.

Hi, you want to get the tree assesed and a report done some tree surgeons offer this service aswell as freelance specialist.

They will probably either do a core sample or a sonic scan as well as a visual inspection. You will then get report as to condition and any work needed. Total removal may not be needed or apropriate.

Im no expert on tree health, only a humble chainsaw operator but it certainly sounds like the tree is unwell. The holes may well be woodpecker.
