So I've got planning permission for a garage in my sloping hillside garden that involves removing approx 85 cu m of subsoil, most of which is chalk. My neighbour has similar plans and has had a quote for £60k which is way over my budget. He has been told that chalk is considered toxic waste and can't go into ordinary landfill. I have sent my plans to a couple of builders for quotes but neither seem interested. Anyone got any ideas how to get rid of that amount and what it might cost?

Dump it in the sea, that's what was was done with the Channel Tunnel waste. I went there on an RICS CPD trip whilst they were constructing it, and can remember being told by the company involved what a good idea it was to construct a new promenade under the cliffs.

Yep its now some kind of a sanctuary/ tourist spot called Samphire Hoe.

Didn't know chalk was considered toxic, what will they think of next?
I guess it depends on how much you are prepared to eat.

I am surprised they were allowed to do that. I might be visiting Samphire Hoe with hidden pouches of chalk sewn inside my trousers, like on the Great Escape. Would take a few trips to get rid of 85 tons.

Heehee! They aren't that big at all - perhaps you could invest in one of those "sumo wrestler" costumes which look like they inflate a bit. Pack that with the chalk instead. Although probably a bit heavy, and possibly a bit odd if the locals see a recurring Sumo everywhere!

That would be two Sumos though, one normal sized earlier then a skinny one later.

I just contacted a local recycling company (@Loofah it's "Chambers" I'm sure you'll have heard of them) and they gave me a very reasonable quote to get rid of it - about £20/ton. They didn't consider it 'toxic' so I'm not sure who had told my neighbour it was.

So my mind is at rest apart from the Great Escape theme tune still in my head.

Excellent news. Now who's tunnelling it out, Tom, Dick or Harry?
