Dividing hostas-advice

    I thougfht i would share some advice on how i divide hostas. Dig up/take out of plant pot the hosta. then, take an old bread knife and cut it in half, if the foliage is up ( i did it a bit laste this year) then be careful not to damage too many stems. Then depending on size cut each half in half again and replant/pot. Essy as that! Especially good for pot bound ones like mine!! more root than compost!!

    thanks for that, strangley enough I was wondering about how to divide mine. What time of year is best to do it?

    best time to do it is in spring when the new leaves are just coming through. I did mine just today actually when the leaves are at their 'big' size. You can do it now i would think (like me). Or if you can wait till spring it would be best, but do it now if you want!

    its best in spring when the shoots are just emerging, however i just did it today and it worked fine!!

    I use an axe with mine :)
    And, yes, spring is best when the new shoots are just appearing, so that you can see what is what

    I have bought a rather expensive Hosta today,4 stalks, some nice plump roots,question, can it be propagated by root cuttings?

    Or am I being to optimistic?????

    Or has anyone tried it and failed???

    im not sure. But if u take a small knife and cut a shoot with a nice bit of root attached then it may work. Even just put straight in the ground!! i did that with some ornamental grass.
