I want to make a purpose built shelter to house the dustbin, and hopefully all 6 recycling tubs as well. but the questions are where to start and how to do it, or if the idea would even work :help:

it needs to be approx 4ft tall due to the main bin and fairly wide to accomodate the recycling tubs. do I build as a sealed 'shed' type structure or have slotted sides? I dont want to attract wildlife to it, but I dont want it to stink when I open it up either

would brick and timber work or just timber? could it work freestanding or would I need to ancour it down (obviously this wouldnt apply if it was brick built as that would be obvious) aesthetically pleasing whilst practical is the aim

also if it was brick built would I need to apply for planning permission?

Are you trying to just build a screen or do you want something weatherproof, with a roof. Also, what shape are your recycling boxes/bins? If they are boxes then you probably want a shelf system (which also helps to stabilise the structure. Personally, I prefer a slatted construction as closed units invariably attract piles of dry leaves and wind-blown rubbish and can look very untidy unless they are cleaned out frequently .

I would sudgest you do it all timber, heres a wood store i made for a client, the frame was 3"x3" tanalised and the roof and bracing 3"x2". Sides are 4"x1" and roof is featerboards.

Using a similar desighn you could easily add doors. The idea of the below desighn is you get airflow but keep the weather off.

I was defo after putting a roof on it, the recycling boxes are the plastic stacker things so stacked of shelves would work brilliantly. in fact the more I look at your wood store Pro-gard the more that's defo the idea I'm after. at the moment the recycling boxes are taking up vital space in the kitchen and the green wheely dustbin outside is a bit of an eyesore tbh, so anything that can disguise it is the idea

    many many thanks chaps x

Very neat and remarkably similar to what I had in mind. I like the featheredge roofing - helps it blend in to the surroundings.
