I'm rather violent towards violets... at least the wild type (Viola odorata) that orchestrate a magnificent symphony of harmony for themselves but a tune as bad as Achy Breaky Heart - by Billy Ray Cyrus for many a gardener.

Thinking about trading the violin in for a piano and growing some peonies out of the lid but the keys will probably end up infested with opportunistic violets.

 

I definitely don't dig them, but do dig them....paradoxically speaking

I delicately hand fork them out but if the soil's too wet or dry, chase the roots out with a dandelion fulcrum. But the pesky little blighters so often wrap their roots around other plants (usually under perrenials... particularly roses and fuschias around here), and it seems that any miniscule fragment of root left behind soon regenerates a cute little violet that invokes another bout of fisticuffs.

It's not so much of a problem on weekly jobs as they succumb more easily, but fortnightly jobs give them some extra time to land an uppercut right on the chin.

They seem incredibly resistant to weedkiller that shrivels even Horestails to oblivion in just over a week. I hate violets, but must admit to admiring their tenacity... and the challenge they provide.
