    Just thinking ahead...

Do residential homes have computer access for residents?
Or maybe possibility of having one installed if requested?

I would have thought that a computer is such a common and essential commodity that an elderly person which is used to it would feel totally lost without it and feel much more isolated...

None of the homes my elderly relatives have stayed in have such a facility Miraflores. I guess the current generation of residents are not computer savvy so maybe no demand. I wonder if that will change?

It would have to be PAT tested (portable appliance testing). That depends on the management of the establishment in question, as its down to them to arrange it.

I'm picturing a whole generation of GCrs in a nursing home still argueing about the moon landing.

Isn't PAT testing a complete and utter waste of money, a set up designed to make a few bob for a few people on the pretense that its going to save lives?

When my step dad had his first stroke, he was eventually allowed his laptop. He seemed to pick up quite a bit from that point on. In the end he lost the battle, but during his last few months I did a lot of reading.

It seems that its well documented and accepted science that mental stimulation both slows down mental decay from various types of illness, and also helps in the recovery of certain types of brain injury.

Unfortunately though, despite living in the 21st century, we still have a 19th century approach to looking after the mentally incapacitated. My sister in law, who I must say is a lovely, caring individual with a heart of pure gold, works in biddy home. She speaks fondly of the inmates, and despite having been there for years, still cries every time one of them dies. Yet she doesn't accept that they can do anything for themselves. Sure, they obviously need help with routine tasks, otherwise they wouldn't be in a care home, but they are still people. I say lets connect them up and get them on-line if that's what they want, and I have no doubt at all that some of them would want that.

Having been involved with PAT testing programmes for a number of years I can confirm the following:-

The test is "supposed" to include:-
              i. a physical check that the correct rated fuse is fitted to the Power plug.
ii. for a non-moulded plug, that the wiring is correct and securely fitted.
iii. verification that the Earth connection of the plug is securely linked to any exposed metal parts.

More importantly the PAT certification label is ONLY valid AT THE TIME OF THE TEST.

Bearing in mind Old Peoples Homes, Hospitals, Community Centres etc. INSIST electrical equipment has a "Valid " Pat Test, I leave it to you to assess it's value.

IMHO PAT testing has it's place, and does identify many equipments with defects when tested, it's an Umbrella Job which employs a person annually to check the testing is "up to date" and another person to carry out a programme of tests.
At between £5-£10 per device, it's a nice little earner for a trained monkey - it's a bl**dy boring job.
