Hi everyone. this is my first posting so be gentle! If I am standing in my back door looking out to my garden I am facing NW ( I assume as the front door faces the rising sun so East?)I guesss this isnt the best of aspects but on the plus side the right hand side of the garden and the patio area near the house are in sun for a lot of the time. because of the layout of various houses this right hand side of the garden also gets the early morning sun and I have been told I should be careful of what i plant here as the early sun and frost on plants can be a bit damaging I am told. There are 2 smallish plum trees here so should they be shielded from the early sun somehow? I am thinking that if there is a very late frost the blossoms may get frost damage? any help would be great

Actually North West is a reasonable direction for a garden to face. It should get a goodly amount of sun and as you say, the frost has gone before the sun gets on it. This is what happens with a North east exposure as you surmise. Plum trees tend to flower early in the year and frost will damage the blossom. We have a large number of members of that family and last year we got NO fruit at all, mainly because of the extremely cold and late weather we had. However, if you are in a town, the local microclimate will be 2 or 3 degrees higher and so frost may not be as much of a problem. I would take a wait and see position. If the blossom gets damaged, then consider mving the trees. If they are smallish they may be tranferred elsewhere fairly easily.
