i have never planted a hanging basket and have dutifully bought basket and a coir liner but it doesnt have holes in. do i make holes in it or just plant on the top. I am mainly planting trailing petunias and some ivy kind of stuff into a wire basket

I have coir baskets and never had much luck with side planting . I find on a 14" basket - one plant in the centre and 6 around the circumference fills it very nicely. Use a good quality multi purpose compost . And put some slow release fertiliser ( hundreds and thousands ) and water gel in.
Line the basket with dustbin liner plastic , it stops water loss and saves the coir for next year.

FP this is a single colour basket , I did last year . Just 5 petunias in this one. These are called Wave® petunias ,not so easy to find . The best available type are called Surfinia® , most garden centres and nursery's will sell them from May . Plant up your basket and if you can keep it indoors for 2 weeks this helps . Lots of info on planting up baskets on t'internet :dbgrtmb:

6 will be fine FP , if you use slow release pellets in the basket this will feed them all year , but from late July also feed with Tomato feed once every couple of weeks . This prolongs the flowering period to possibly late October :dbgrtmb:
