I was trying last night to get to the bottom of a really bad odour in my garden/vicinity. My husband has a cold so he couldn't smell anything. I thought at forst it may have been where i buried the cat but it wasnt that either. I have a rowan tree which has JUST started to blossom and last night when i got home it was covered with wasps abd bees on the flowers. When i went out much later the smell had almost gone but when near the tree I was able to smell it again and i am now wondering if this tree when it blossoms gives off this stench as a kind of ' quick! come and get me' message to the bees.

Certainly Rowans do have scented flowers. I like the smell, but my wife thinks it is awful, so I suppose it is all a matter of taste.

Most rowans have a nice scent that will waft on a warm evening breeze but occasionally you can get one with a 'catty' smell like some elderberry.

They can be quite pungent and sometimes a bit musky in the evening heat.

There is a very pungent pale yellow broom that's become popular. Stink is the only word for it and I'm wondering if this could be the culprit as it could be in a neighbour's garden some distance away.
