Do you know a shrub with red foliage?

I am looking for a shrub with red foliage for a shady and dry part of the garden.
I saw a nice shrub in someone's garden, it had red round leaves. He told me the name starts with a C. I thought someone out there would know. I am not even sure it is suitable for shade. Can you help?

The plant you're thinking of is Cotinus coggygria probably "Royal Purple" or "Grace". It is a deciduous shrub. Most red leaved plants need some light to keep their colour, & will revert to green if in too much shade, in oreder to produce sufficient chlorophyll. You could try one of the Japanese maples, these are "understorey" plants, which means they grow in the protection of taller plants, and will tolerate shade. Acer palmatum ââ?¬Å?Atropurpureumââ?¬Â Dissectum "garnet",ââ?¬Å?Crimson Queenââ?¬Â, ââ?¬Å?Garnetââ?¬Â
"Bloodgood", or "Burgundy Lace".
Ground cover evergreen plant Bergenia, has large leathery leaves which colour up in autumn-winter to a lovely red.
A favourite of mine is Cercis canadensis "Forest Pansy" which has heart shaped wine coloured leaves & will tolerate a small amount of shade. Or evergreen Pieris japonica which has red new foliage and does need partial to full shade (again an understorey plant). This is off the top of my head I'll have a think on some more.

How about Photinia "Red Robin". Quite a sturdy shrub bearing red tips to the foliage in Summer. Very attractive and noticeable.Will withstand a bit of dryness and shade
