Does anywhere sell garlic this year?!

    Skipping the online shops of which there are loads, has anyone found garlic in the nurseries this year? Managed to get some onion sets and assumed that the garlic would be right there alongside but apparently not...

    If anyone knows of a source near Guildford / Woking that would be great!

    Hi Loofah, unless you're looking for a particular variety of garlic then some from the supermarket should do fine.
    I started my garlic years ago from supermarket stuff and now I just replant my own.

    I tried it last year from supermarket ones but just got exceptionally small bulbs from them. Do you replant these? I guess that should work out ok as they won't have been sprayed with anything...?

    We were talking about this the other day, it was ok to do that a few years ago, but they now spray them with growth inhibitor to prolong the shelf life. Hence the small blubs.

    Yes, but what about planting the resultant small bulbs that have grown from the sprayed supermarket original? They wouldn't have the spray but <may> have residual inhibitor?

    Will try Robert Dyas - its the only place I haven't tried I think!

    You should be ok with those, but just in case, i'd get some more as well.

    First plants I remember buying was in RDs, grape hyacinths for a penny each back in the early 1970s

    Have you got an organic/health food shop nearby? Is food for thought still going.

    Organic garlic won't have been sprayed.

    Oo, just had a thought, ask JWK where he got his from, he's near you.

    I bought mine from the The Garlic Farm on the Isle of Wight last year when we went over on Holiday. It's not the cheapest but they were excellent quality and grew really well. I've an idea I've seen their products for sale in garden centres around here, I think it was either at Badshot Lea or Secretts (in Godalming). I need to buy some more for myself so I'll keep an eye out. I've bought some from Wilkinsons in the past but they never grew very well.

    I bought mine years ago Loofah so maybe they hadn't been sprayed.
    Looking in the organic shops is a good suggestion from Ziggy.

    Hi im from the island and yep the garlic farm is selling loads of different types and you can buy it direct from them http://www.thegarlicfarm.co.uk/ I got some the other day not the cheapist but defo worth it :)
