Been trying to get to sleep for a few hours now but have been unable to due to the dog down the road barking into the night again. I was just wondering weather anyone else has had this problem and if so how easy was it to get resolved. I know what I need to do, and I intend to report the problem to the council on Monday.

We are surrounded by six dogs and another three over the way and for as long as I can remember one of the dogs continually barks whenever anyone comes to their front door or the sprogs come home from school and make a noise as they walk along the paths to get home. The owner chucks it outside when she goes to pick up her sprogs and as the garden is enclosed with high walls so the sound echo's.

The couple over the road have a collie and since they have had their sprog the dog lives more in the garden so when we are all asleep in bed the dog hears or sees a cat or other animal in the vicinity and starts barking like mad which wakes everyone up in the street:eeew:

I think my next door neighbour went across and had a quiet word with them the other week about it but to start with it didn't seem to do any good but these last few days all has been quiet:ThankYou:

Apart from either having a quiet word with them or contacting the council,{Enviromental Health? }I am not sure what you can do and can sympathise with you as it does get very wearing and sleep deprivation is not funny:mad:Good Luck and hope you get the problem resolved:smile:

I agree with Kandy Allan...any chance you could have a word with the owner...are they approachable ?....if you get no joy from them then i'd report it:dbgrtmb:....there's nothing worse than a barking dog....i have two and i must say they are very good...they only bark if they here another dog at it but i do quiet them down....i can't understand how some people can be out in their garden and their dog is barking like billy 'o' and they just let them carry on....it would drive me nuts....

I'm not sure if I could have a word or not. the noise is coming from like 2 streets away but the garden kind of backs onto where we are (if that makes sense)and I have no idea if whoever lives there is appreciable or not, so better being safe than sorry by not knocking. on top of that I'm only about 95% sure which house it is. The only excuse I can think of for it would be that whoever lives there works nights and doesn't know about the noise. I live very close to a park so id say I'm pretty ok with dogs barking and running wild where they shouldn't be lol but the barking when your trying to get to sleep (and into 2am) is just not on, I think ill just report it and let the council do there job, Id take a guess that I wouldn't be the first round here. I just feel sorry for the direct Nabors.

I had this from folk who backed onto me :frown:, dog was shut out all hours poor little thing, I even used to shut my bedroom windows to try to keep the sound out, owners were not exactly what you would call 'approachable' well if they were it wouldn't happen would it? was always sure I would get a mouthful of abuse, their next door neighbours reported them to the Council, eventually it did stop. :gaah:

How many days has this been going on for? We've had this problem many times over the years, but it's never lasted long enough to be worth complaining. If you do complain to your local Environmental Health Dept. they'll need you to specifically identify where the offending dog resides, then keep diaries for several weeks, plus if nobody else complains it will not help your case. If the barking dog lives in a 'social housing' property you can always contact their landlords housing managers, but although it will probably be against their tenancy conditions, it wont be sufficient grounds for a court to grant a possession order (evict them), but it might influence some tenants who know no better. That knowledge is not from being complainants, but from my wife's previous occupations.

So it might be best to speak to some of your neighbours to determine whether they are also having problems and if so present a united front.

P.S. But if you take the Environmental Health route they will most likely ask what you have done to try and resolve the problem - like speaking with the dog's owners. My wife dealt with a case of a barking dog with a deaf owner who was mortified when he was told it was causing problems and got it sorted immediately.

Some people shouldn't be allowed to keep dogs.
Its the dog I feel sorry for, a contented dog does not bark all night.
Its obviously being kept in bad conditions, with bad owners, or at best negligent owners.

Report it and hope the dog gets move to a decent home.

The council will do nowt. If its regular, or if it sounds like the dog is neglected, it may be a job for the RSPCA. They will investigate immediately.

Good job you don't live in the country here Allan ... it can go on all night. Then you get the Little Owls 'screeching' (Woo knows all about this :heehee: ). Then there are the roosters ....

As we tend to keep our windows open all the time (except now when we have the a/c on) it is just something you accept or 'get used to'! What annoys me more is the sodding wood pigeons who start 'cooing' at 6.30ish ... I am retired so like to sleep a bit longer than when I worked so this drives me to distraction ...

funny we were only talking about this the other day, my brother was telling me how one of his mates has 'problem' neighbours who have two large dogs, he works nights & the dogs go ballistic barking when they hear him coming home late at night, the neighbours are...unsavory folk apparently so he's keeping away but the trick he uses to quieten the dogs, you'll love this:heehee: is to cook up a load of rashers, break them up into little pieces & flings them as far as he can over the boundary wall (so there distributed around the garden) the dogs are instantly quiet as they go huntin' about for the rashers...i couldn't help but laugh:rofllol: i'd give him five stars for creativity :heehee:

Neighbours have two little yappy dogs that are set off at the slightest noise. I just let myself be very unsubtle in the garden one day while they were all outside and shortly afterwards they mentioned the dogs were now undergoing training and they have some weird device that shuts them up instantly. Think it's some form of dog whistle but haven't seen it.

Think I was lucky they were so reasonable to be honest, dogs can be hard to shut up!

I had a little rant on facebook too and someone who lives close by said the same dog was also keeping her up, so its not just me. I think I'm going to have problems because its not every night maybe one night a week or so. surprisingly we have had the odd owl screeching around here even though we are very close to town centre. And once in a while you can hear cat fights. and there is a lot of noise from people walking home from the clubs. but nothing annoys me more than a barking dog lol.
