    I bought a dog cage to go in the back of my wife's car. I had to take a chance with the measurements. I knew that they were there are there abouts and therefore worth the risk. It came flat packed and wasn't the easiest thing to put together.

    When I got it in the car, the floor space was a perfect fit but I wasn't able to fasten the rear seats into their upright position. Also the well of the boot prevents the doors of the cage from opening. Having spent a reasonable amount of money on it I as determined I was going to keep it and make it fit.

    Today I made a base to lift the cage high enough for the doors to open. I have re measured the boot so I am pretty certain the base will fit comfortably. The car isn't here today so I haven't had a chance to test it.

    I have made it out of pallet wood and MDF. For once I happened to have all the materials I needed kicking around. Ideally I would like to have made some kind of brace but I didn't have any more pallets. I will keep an off cut with me and see if anything turns up whilst I'm out and about.

    Question,;

    What should I paint/treat this with? I'm sure it would be fine as it is but as it's going into the car I don't want to have problems with mildew or woodworm etc.

    Any advice would be appreciated.

    I would just use fence paint.

      I doubt you will get mildew or woodworm, it mostly depends of if you are going to see it or not.
      I suppose maybe the MDF could get wet??
      Wet dog jumping in there.
      I'd probably seal the MDF with a clear polyurethane or one of the oil based clear sealers.

      Or the old fashioned idea, just paint it, possibly an acrylic.

        I have given my base 2 coats of white undercoat. Ideally I would like to paint it black as the cage is black and so is the upholstery in the boot of the car. The only black paint I have is a metal rust cure paint. Will that work? I have used it in the past to paint concrete ornaments. If not then the best I have without buying any fresh is fence paint. I am more than happy to use that but it wouldn't look as nice as I would like.
