Hi guys, Im really miffed by this one so any help would be appreciated. I am an amateur grow your own enthusiast and as has been my want over the years I put the seeds in the soil and see what comes up. (it works for me!)

Anyhow around 6 weeks or so ago I planted some seeds, staples like carrots, onions etc and all was doing fine. I was delighted to see a lil forest of carrot seedlings had sprouted and they were coming along fine.

Today I trundle down the garden to water them and WTH?? not a seedling in sight. The whole lot are gone.

The only clue I have is that upon going to the shed to fetch some more seeds to sow (all my seed types and packets were in one place) I note that both packets of carrot seeds have been eaten apparently by mice or some small toothed critter.

Could it be mice or voles or some such that have eaten my seedlings? Ive never had this happen before so am completely baffled

That's so disappointing. I am also at war with slugs and snails. Lettuce leave and sweet pea being their food of choice. I have slug pellets down, crushed up egg shells, copper tape and coffee all in session to see if I can win the war! Between the birds, the slugs, snails and ants - I am spread thin! By the way I saw a little gold coloured beetle thing today. Is that a pest I should be aware of?

Ants - what damage can they do? Millions of them - everywhere.

But if every couple of ants take a seed then........
I have had this happen to me in the past, so now I statr off as much as possible in modules until an inch or so high. In dry weather pigeons are more likely than slugs.

Hi @denghisthedog :) I'm only new to the gardening world and currently growing my very first veggies :dancy:.....Having move recently, a lot of new friends laughed when I told them... And said good luck with the slugs, butterflies, pigeons, rabbits, deer etc etc so at first when I put the seed in I covered them with clutches and once outgrown them I came up with this idea :ideaIPB:...attached photos .. I only lift them now to weed :phew:

I've had Wood Pigeons and Rabbits take out entire rows of Carrot seedlings.

hi guys thanks for the suggestions, its not slugs as far as I can see. no trails, no sign of the pesky critters, my neds are raised off the ground around waist high so I have some added protection, the two beds are netted but I was quite interested by the ant suggestion. I have a LOT of ant nests in front garden so stands to reason there will be there somewhere in back. Apple Blossom those are real neat. nice idea. My favoured slug weapon is the old one - pale ale or similar beer in a shallow dish. works every time ;)
