Well here we were juggling our first season of growing tomatoes as well as a few other 'stuff' and thought we were doing so well only finding out yesterday we have been growing no end of side shoots that shouldn't have been allowed to grow in the first place!:o:rolleyes:

It was a total jungle in the greenhouse needless to say 'Jungle Jim' as now shown us the error of our ways and told Bob what to pinch out and what to leave, now all we have to do is hope we haven't left it too late for the tomatoes to grow!

It's so very embarrassing as there was even a thread on here showing pictures of what to take off...oh well as the saying goes there's one born every minute!:D Hel.xxx.

Ha Ha Ha Ho Ho He He Heee!!!! Only joking Helofadigger, most of yesterday I spent doing exactly the same thing to my own mini jungle, I now know the difference between cordon tomatoes and bush tomatoes and this is my third year as a greenhouse owner. I hacked off some pretty big suckers and have reduced them all to single stem plants, probably much later in the growing cycle than would be advised. I don't know if the post is the same one I used as a reference but http://www.taunton.com/finegardening/how-to/articles/pruning-tomatoes.aspx this is very helpful if there are any other struggling amatuers like me out there.

A Homer Simpson moment then?.... DOH!
My first year of tomatoes too, its a steep learning curve! Think I managed to get (most...) of the side shoots, but they're certainly not the prettiest of specimens.

Best of luck with yours, I'm sure you'll have a great crop.

You can read and look pics as much you want, but one has to see and learn things "in the flesh" to make sense of things. ;)

but still i have a second greenhouse now about 20 plants and around 275 tomatoes which ave formed dont know if thats good or bad so if its bad i will do better next year.
thjey say growing toms is easy but i reckon its not. but well worth it.

Thank goodness I'm not the only loon on here!:D

Now we didn't have a problem with our Tumbling Toms as they don't need to have any cosmetic surgery and boy is there an awful lot of fruits coming on them so even if we don't get many on the upright toms we won't go hungry!;) Hel.xxx.

Hel - I've been growing toms for over 30 years and can still miss some of those pesky side shoots, I found several really large ones last night that must have been there for a few days. Sometimes I leave them on if they are really big because I don't like leaving a large open wound as it might encourage diseases, in this case I will just 'stop' the growing tip on the side shoot.

My green house is turning into a jungle now as well and I'm going to have to be a bit serious about the tomatoes.
I just hate hurting the plant so I always feel bad when I have to take side shoots off.
I know....it is stupid really but plants have feelings, don't they?:)
