Don't throw the baby out with the bath water is an apt title for this thread as that is what I almost did!
I've grown some Canarina canariensis from seed, but the pot in the dining room soon died. Or so I thought. I emptied the pot on the rockery area by the kitchen and forgot about it until this morning when I saw this.....................


It would appear that one of the two plants in that pot had not died, just decided that the conditions that I was growing them in were too hot for it to carry on!

Next time I'll check first rather than just chuck the contents of the pot!!

 

Hi LongK - I have had exactly the same experience. A couple of years ago I also grew Canarina from seed - one grew well but one plant "died" very early when it was only a few inches high. Later I found the "dead" plant had made a small tuber like yours.

The good plant grew to about 2 feet last winter and had a single flower, shown above. But this year its already over 3 feet and at the start of its season - so I have high hopes. The runt is still going and has just started to grow.

I also had the same thing with Gloriosa from seed. One plant "died" very early - but, to my surprise, it still managed to make a very small tuber. And again with Sandersonia (a close relative of Gloriosa). I bought a tuber, which is small anyway, it grew a few leaves and then "died" after a short while. But it left a new tuber only a quarter of the size of the original. I assumed the tuber was too small to be viable, and left it on the side to chuck out. After several months it had dried out and shrivelled to become even smaller, but just as I was about to throw it out I noticed a tiny dark purple bud at one end. Its growing happily now, and has several leaves. There is something very gratifying about nursing one of your own from seed, as compared to just buying it. I was pleased as Sandersonia is no longer offered by Jaques Armand, my original source, and is very difficult to find.

 

Mine are a little behind yours at the moment Peter. They'll be in the g/house with a little heat this winter I'm afraid as my front room hits 25°c once I get the fire going!

I'm just building up the courage to dry out my seed grown Gloriosa lutea for their first winter rest.
