how do I kill my lawn? The best quickest and cheapest way please.

The reason being I want to get rid of our front lawn without having to remove the turf.

Kill it, cover it with cardboard, put weed membrane down and then gravel it to cut down on lugging the lawn mower around as poor old Bob's not as young or as fit as he use to be!Hel.xxx.

My father-in-law wanted to do that a few years ago. He was in favour of either a flame-thrower or a chemical defoliant (there must be a legal version of napalm or Agent Orange somewhere!). So were his sons. But my mother-in-law vetoed this, and the lawn remains.

Seriously, a flame gun might be an option (I think Bob would have a whale of a time). HSS have one for under £20 for a day:

Julia I honestly can't trust Bob with anything remotely dangerous you don't want to know what he got upto in a DIY store a few years back think staple gun and gas canisters and you can get a very scary picture needless to say we left the shop pretty darn quick!

So if anyone's got to play Rambo its got to be me! :D Hel.xxx.

Hi Hel, id say cover it with membrain, my sister did that a couple of year back and had no problem, she laid brick edging around, (higher than the lawn) laid the membrain then the gravel..Dee..

Thanks Dee that's kind of what I wanted to hear and it's always much better if someone knows someone who has done it that way in the past and still everything is ok.....quick easy and painless! Hel.xxx.

Spray it with round up a week b4 you lay the membrane, I wouldnt just cover it as you may get weeds creeping up through the edge.

I agree with Paul, Helen, use Roundup first.

Paul weeds around the edge will not bother me as I enjoy nothing more than popping my MP3 player on, knee pads and weeding for hours on end.

I should have mentioned that we have flower beds all the way round the lawn (on the front) so if I do have to use any weed killer I will have to be very careful..... after all I don't want to kill the plants in the borders as they are all doing really well.Hel.xxx.

An old carpet works well, although a waterproof layer may be needed also.

If you're worried about the edges, do what P.G. says only use a watering can or hose bar. That gives you more control over where the poison is going. [IMG]

The cheapest way to get rid of the lawn would be to put up a sign saying 'Turf for sale. Buyer must collect'
