I grow single cordon Sweet Peas - not because I want to show them, but for cut flowers.

I had a few really dodgy plants this year (my fault, failed to water them at the right time :( ) but I planted them anyway and ... guess what? ... they didn't make it :(

So I have a few gaps, with canes already in place etc.

I am training a side shoot from an adjacent plant across to run up the spare canes.

Which led me to think could I do that for all my plants, in which case I only need to raise half as many next year :gnthb:

    What do you think?

I'm sure whatever you try will work Kristen.

It's always worth a try Kristen. I have the opposite problem-all mine made it and I have run out of space for them, so they will have to do what they can over a hurdle of willow whips.

Given that I've got a few "gaps" for double cordons to have to cover, I'll see how they have looked by the end of the season. Layering them will no doubt be interesting! (although I suppose if I did it for real I could supplier two rows from one plant, rather than adjacent plants in each row)

I'll report back in the Autumn ...

    Hello Kristen

I've only just joined and finding it difficult at the moment getting around the site but I will persevere. I posted on the introduction site earlier this morning and asked if anyone knew why my sweet pea buds are dying off before they bloom. I grow them most years with no probs and reading yours about your sweet peas I wondered if you could help.

Looking forward to chatting more over the coming weeks

    Maggae Mae

Weather has been a bit chilly ... and several of my buds failed to form properly, but I've picked a nice bunch this morning :)

My highly specialised sweet-pea growing technique is:
    1) stick some 6ft canes in the ground and connect them with strings horizontally
    2) stick a load of plants in
    3) leave to grow

My display is spectacular! They are all over the house too.

"They are all over the house too"

In that case don't bother with the canes next year :hehe:
