Dragonflies

    Does any one know how long an adult dragon fly lives for. I know the nymphs live for up tp three years in the pond but what about the adults? It's a matter of some debate in my local.

    Only a matter of a month or so, as I recall. Long enough to find a territory, defend it, and mate as often as possible.

    Thankyou, some people were getting them mixed up with may flies that only last 1 day.

    Spot on Fran two months max they are wonderful aerial predators

    we have lots of dragon fly hovering over the pond. large der and all blue these are smaller, and saw an unusually marked dragon fly. it had lime green and dark green stripes(horizontal) on its body very large one.4 wings colourless.

    I bet this is the same as we have every year, I must look the name up. It is this really huge one, isn't it FANCY?

    yes KEDI-GATO IT IS ABOUT 5" AND VERY PRETTY. NEVER SEEN ONE OF THOSE BEFORE HERE.I will put pic. on when hubby gets home.

    Looks like Sympetrum fonscolumbii (red veined darter) its fully adult, superb picture

    Is this your thing then Walnut? Afterall I would guess there are not many folks that know the latin names to these lovely insects.

    Are we talking about the lovely dragonfly or the lovely plant it is sitting on?

    the lovely dragonfly , the plant behind is a bottle brush. not seen this dragonfly before.

    Royster just interested in all living things don't know the latin names off the top of my head know some of the common names then google
    Fancy thats a stunning picture worhy of a wild life magazine what you have there is a Southen Hawker(Aeshna Cyanea) thats a female the males are blue were the females are green
