Went into my local T**** Extra for my biscuit substitute, i.e. a packet of Californian Seedless Raisins, instead of about one Great British Pound, they wanted about £1.60. Thats a hellova hike! Why? Have they had a bad season in California?

:sunny:Hi Grumpy, funny you should mention this as I was actually talking to my friend about the raisin producers not so long ago as she lives in the San Joaquin Valley.. Also I found this too which explains the price hike over here I think... :fingerdrum:

£1.59 at T's and £1.54 at Asda but still much less at Sainsburys, Morrisons and Waitrose - but for how long?

Tesco Californian Seedless Raisins (500g) in Tesco | mySupermarket

Same story with the Value Sultanas I use in winemaking, 99p at T's & Asda, but still 64p at Sainburys & Morrisons, not that I'll need to buy any for some time as I stocked up when they (and other stuff in the Homebaking Aisle) were on 3 for 2.

That amount paid of $1,500/ton for dried raisins is only 10p/lb based on the weight of fresh grapes which have to be grown, harvested and dehydrated.

It's not just raisins that are going up in price it is everything mainly due to high fuel prices, demand by third world countries whos workers now want a better standard of living, the weather, plus greedy shop keepers who want to own the universe and open as many shops as they can in as many plots of vacant land as they can:mad:

My sister used to work for J Sainsbury's and said that if offers were made on some items of food in one area of a shop then other food items went up in price to cover it.One reason why our shop keepers make Billions in profit each year:mad:

When the bread we eat went up to £1.19 a loaf the other year we refused to buy it and got ourselves a breadmaker and have made our own ever since but even the price of the ingrediants for the machine has gone up considerably:mad:

Also they were talking on the news that many people are not going to be able to heat their homes this coming winter as the price of gas and electric goes up so we are all bening squeezed one way or another:mad:

Sorry, gone a bit off topic there,as you were all talking about the price of Raisins:mute:

I absolutely agree. Are T**** using the difference to fund a massive empire offering every conceivable choice and service to their customers or are they just pocketing the profit?

I just get mine at the Asian stores. Simples!

Just looked in the cuboard, 1kg of dried coconut milk powder - £5.99 from the Welsh supermarket. That'll last me a year.

I too make my own bread when i've got time, but when i;m away Morrisons have been doing a decent loaf for 60p

I think a pint of coconut milk would last me out.
We always washed it down the sink when we bought a coconut when I was a kid.
Even the the birds got most of the flesh.:loll:

Coconuts best used for compost I say.
          Nice tree though.:D

As for supermarkets, its easy, we should all stop using them.

Who's going to be first,.... hands up.:D

There's an old lady in our village who will sit in her greenhouse during a sunny winter's day because it's warmer in there than her house which she can't afford to heat.

Getting back to prices, we live 6, 12 & 13 miles from different stores of the same supermarket chain and they have various items priced differently.

Back in the days of Safeways when they had deals that changed every week (or so?) that varied according to region I'd always call in at their Bridgwater store on the way back from fishing the Bristol Channel to see if there was anything different worth stocking up with.
