heres a pic of the bit i am currently working on. what i would like is to put a small slow growing hardy palm in this section. it gets blasted by the sun from midday till about 6 pm or so and can be quite dry and windy sometimes. something that can easily be sourced at a garden center or b&q etc. any suggestions? i am going to put down golden flint chippings which will brighten it up. any other ideas would be welcome as well.

Chamaerops Humilis or European Fan Palm, it is slow growing fairly hardy and loves full sun, I have seen small specimens in Wilkos for around £5.

The hardiest palm, Trachycarpus (Windmill Palm) and half hardy Phoenix (Date Palm) might be too big for your narrow border.

The purple cordyline you have there will be ok in the ground, they usually become top heavy in a pot.

Small variegated Phormiums will brighten it up too.:)

Hi Catztail it seems a kind of small area for plants that's going to grow pretty big like palm types do. I would just add some lovely bright carex grass to the area there's a good choice to choose from I'm sure something will take your fancy.

If you have another area in your garden with a bit more room then I would plant that cordy somewhere else as I personally believe those plants look their best when they have room to breathe so to speak.Hel.xxx.

Oh what am I like??? LOL I went and did it anyway hehehehehe! I just couldn't resist. I found a dwarf fan palm that had 3 seperate trunks on it so I bought it and hacked it up and planted the biggest section here. All 3 are doing really well too. I figured that I would have either won the lottery and moved or got tired of the whole thing and ripped it out before it gets too big. :hehe: I have to say I am pleased with how it turned out.

Thanks Penny! I am pleased with it I must say and here is how it looks today. I have a few pots down by the garage door which we don't use very often. This was taken this evening which is the only time the sun hits the area where the pots are at.
