    Good morning all,
Recently acquired an 8" echium pinniata seedling in a pot. But it's gone all droopy :( Is it just the pot its objecting to? It's had enough water (it's raining and cool today) but its larger leaves are drooping badly. Help!! I don't want to lose it, but it's new home still isn't quite ready yet, so it will have to remain in the pot for a few more days.

I'm sure we have enough to spare!! ;) Hows the giant Beschonaria doing? Mig fighters come to shoot it down for interfering with airspace yet? :D
Echiums are one of my faves and it should love my windy coastal garden. If I can just get it to stay alive until it's permanent home is properly finished :( What did you do with your seedlings ? Did you plant them straight in the garden or were they in a pot for a while first? I got it from a car boot on Sunday, but its looked decidely poorly since Wednesday. Have got some seeds coming from a friend, but really wanted a spike sooner

This is not pininana, its some crazy mixed up hybrid, but its similar.
I find they need loads of water in summer, otherwise they stop growing, they make most of their growth in autumn here, and that gives me a problem with winter frosts.
Lost all my plants last year, due to frost, but thats the first time in about five years.
Your floppy one could perhaps be, because its recently been potted up, for sale. If so they usually survive OK.

Love the pic Pete. Took it out of its pot and it was, as Steve said, waterlogged. No drainage material at all, and with the rain we've had it was absolutely wringing. Hastily dug a hole in a dry part of the garden and planted it there without watering in. Hopefully it will dry out and grow up to be as majestic as yours [IMG]

Was it well rooted in the pot, if the pot had drainage holes I cant believe it was water logged. They love water when established.

No it wasn't well rooted at all. Looked as though it had just been dug up and dumped in there :( Just been out to look at it and there's no improvement yet, the topmost leaves still look ok so there's hope yet. It's got a fighting chance now it's in the ground. It's in the lap of the Gods...
Hey!! I got a rating of 2 stars now! Thank you whoever you are

Windy, i carefully pulled the seedlings up and put them straight into a pot of compost....i'd say 6 out of 12 survived....50%

Floppy echium update! After planting it out it does seem to have perked up a bit. I think the lowest leaves are too far gone, but the top few are definately a lot less droopy. Yay!! I'm well chuffed. Just wish this bl**dy gale would drop :(
