I recently planted three climbers in my garden. Two of them are showing signs of growth, but the third - Dublin Bay isn't. They have been in the ground for about 3 1/2 weeks. Is it too early to expect growth for this particular rose?

    Thanks
    Mo.

I always give any new plant at least a couple of seasons before giving up on it. Most have remarkable powers of regeneration.

Also, a lot of things are behind this year with the cold weather so don't be too impatient. It may simply have had a shock being planted into cold saturated soil.

Thanks, I inherited an overgrown garden almost three years ago now. Patience has never been one my strong points. [IMG]

A little thought for you, papajo! And all you newly converted gardeners.

    Recipe for a gardener:
A barrel load of hard work
    Plenty of energy
    Constant optimism
    Unremitting patience
    Unflagging perseverance
    A good supply of luck
Ability to accept advice from others
A little knowledge to season (optional!)
And finally, a talent for learning by your mistakes!

I'd add a more practical requirement to MD's list
an infinite capacity for cups of tea! And an understanding partner helps a lot too! ;)

Well a little bit of patience and a little bit of sun makes all the difference. I now have a few shoots on my rose. Maybe I'll even be able to post a photograph of it in the summer.
Thanks for your replies. I would have probably dug it up and tried with a new one before now.

I had a Dublin bay before I moved home. It was a slow starter and took a full season just to establish. After that it grew really well with loads of blooms every year. Had it for 10yrs before we moved to the new house.

Well folks it's finally decided to flower. I really like it, can't wait until next year to train it over the trellis.

I pruned back the roses really hard this year, thought I had lost one of them but on Wednesday last week I noticed that it had finally decided to get going. It was nearly dug up to!
