I don't know whether people realise that due to this hot weather it is reckoned that millions of Song Birds will die due to them not being able to find drinking water.

While we were on holiday this last heat wave we started putting out fresh water for them on the camp site we stayed on.They went mad for it.

While driving round the island we saw birds sitting on the verges with their beaks open as if they were suffering.

So lets do something to help them by putting out fresh water every day for drinking and bathing. After all they help keep the pests at bay.

    Thankyou
    Kandy

Funny you should mention this - about 15 mins ago, I caught a little sparrow sat on the edge of the mop bucket I had put outside the back door!!!! I thought it was trying to get a drink, so have outsed a plant from a big saucer and put that in the middle of the lawn area and will keep it topped up.....

Yes - fresh clean water is very inportant. My resident blackbirds sometimes pant like dogs with their beaks open. Somewhere to bathe is also important. When the wpood pigeons or magpies are hogging the pond and bird bath, they comeup to the house and bathe in the dog's water bowl! [IMG]

Our bird bath is always full (of water and birds) and my favourite water feature is water just burbling up and over a mill stone - the birds and the dogs are constantly drining it dry!

We put out fresh water for the birds every day of the year (except when we are away and then someone comes in once or twice a week to do it). We have an old, large, baking dish and a paint roller tray that we fill with water. The roller tray is useful because it has two different levels so has a deep and a shallow end. Guess what? The birds prefer the baking dish.
They drink and bathe in both and it is great fun watching them - it is just outside the kitchen window.

Today a woodpigeon came to drink and then decided the water was nice and cool so fell asleep in the baking dish.

I have a large bowl underneath my elderberry tree for the birds which is filled up every day of the year and also now they go in the pond..i found a frog in the water bowl yesterday he had the shock of his life when he got tipped out so i could clean and refill it..The frogs must be nervous wrecks in my garden with me around..no where is safe...!!

Good one Paladin. Now that you mention it I haven't seen it before either, but he didn't stay to be basted.
