i think i will go with virgin if i can, but i want to make sure i don't lose any stored e-mails or addresses.

can anyone recommend a way of doing this (saving messages & getting new address out to people) easily. i'm a bit of a dunce when it comes to this as you know

how do i know i have contacted every site i use not just personal e-mail addresses?

    cheers all

You should be able to export your address book.
If you open your address book, then left click on 'File' on the top menu, it should drop down a menu which has 'export' and 'import' on it. click on 'export' and give the file a name. All your addresses will then be saved in that new file.

When you get your new e-mail, import that file back in.

To save all your messages. Open the folder where they are eg. your INBOX. Left click on one of your e-mails, then press ctrl and 'A' at the same time to select them all. Then right click on them and select 'copy to folder'. Give a folder name and it will copy all your messages in the INBOX to the folder you specified.

Sorry, I'm not sure what you mean when you say you haven't an address yet.

I assume that your address book (an icon on the top of outlook which looks like an open book) contains the addresses of everybody you've ever e-mailed.

If you open it and select file/export/Adressbook(WAB), you will get a screen which will say at the top 'save in'. It will have a bar to the right of it which will already have a folder name in it (usually the last folder you used on your C drive. That will be the folder that the address book will be exported to unless you click the down arrow on the end of that bar and select a different folder.

It doesn't matter what folder you put it into, so long as you can find it again.
At the bottom of the window will be a box which says file name. type the name like 'my address book' in here and then press save.

Then use explorer to go to the folder and there will be a file there called 'my address book'
If you click on it and open it, it will look exactly the same as it did in outlook, except that this copy is on your computer and so is outside of outlook and won't be affectd by any changes you make to outlook.

Hope that helps, it's hard to explain without being able to show.

Borrowers. Don't worry, you won't lose your address book when you put in a new email account for yourself. I assume you are using either Outlook or Outlook Express? All you need to do is go into tools, accounts and add an account. All your details that are on your machine will still be there. They will just be sent and received using new pop and smtp servers.

i don't know if i'm using outlook express or whatever!!!
how do you know? i just log in thru net.
i have windows xp if that helps.
i will try that with my email addresses, but what about sites i visit eg this one? how will they know that i have a new address?
i shouldn't be using a computer should i :D but then i wouldn't have found this site, so that's good enough for me.

You are almost certainly using Outlook Express then.

I'm afraid that the only way people will know that you are using a new email address is to tell them, by email. Once you get your new address then email everybody and tell them.

Sites like this one you have to go into your profile and change your email address. I know it sounds difficult but as long as you know your log in name and password then it really isn't. All the instructions are there.

The main thing with changing anything to do with a computer is 'don't panic' (don't panic everyone, Mr Mainwaring). Just read the instructions and if you get stuck, just ask.

Oh. And don't forget that if you are really stuck, you can always rejoin, perhaps as 'Lenders'.

I had to when I lost my previous password and couldn't email webmaster because....I didn't have my password. :D

    thanks john
love it that you got the 'name'.
that's the problem isn't it, you get stuck & then you can't get help cos you can't remember password etc.
suppose if i go onto a site they will allow me to change things. it might not work though, cos bt won't 'recognise' me and allow me to change.
well i will get there eventually.
btw - i can't believe that i'm hearing a lawnmower. not because of the time of year, just that it's pitch black outside!
    cheers

The only emails you are likely to lose are the ones sent to your box after you have discontinued that address. The best way of making sure that you don't lose any emails is to have your own domain.

I'm no expert at this but it is possible that you do not use 'Outlook' or 'Outlook Express' when you use your emails. You might be logging in directly to your BT email account and using that. If you are then you had better find out (sorry, I can't help you) where your address book is and how to copy it.

If you are using 'Outlook' or 'Outlook Express' it will say so at the top left-hand side of your screen when you are doing your emails.

    Good luck. [IMG]
