    Hi All
I would like to grow a sample of potatoes in the greenhouse as I have never grown them successfully before, I plan on using an old compost bag and mixing soil and compost any ideas on how best to approach this and what type of potatoes would be best to buy and when is the earliest I can start them off I want to grow for an early heavy yield on this experiment. I guess it will be best to start them now in the greenhouse and move outside when the frosts have finished, one concern I do have is if I move the sack (as I hope it will be)the roots may be disturbed will this upset their growth or kill them??

I will have a further look in my books and see what they say.

Dave, you could use a large pot, if you can get hold of one about 20 litres it would be ideal. I only grow potatoes in pots using a variety called Rocket, it grows well in containers giving a good crop of " new " potatoes. You can start them now in a frost free greenhouse. Put about 2" of soil/compost in the bottom of the pot, place 2 or 3 seed potatoes on that with the " eyes " facing up, then fill the pot to about an inch below the rim. Then leave it to it`s own devices.

    Hi David

I have planted Rocket in the boxes as shown below I think I put 5 in the bucket and 8-9 in the box I know that seems a lot but we had to buy a mixed bag full for £4.49 and I have limited room for planting??

I have laid out Kestrel and King Edwards (from the same bag) as shown and put them in the garage I seem to remember reading on this site that is the best thing to do!!

I might try to grow the King Edwards in a dustbin!! what do you think about that???

    Thanks for the help

    Dave

Dave, go for it. If you don`t experiment you never learn. Plants have 2 chances, they either do or they don`t, but until you try you will never know. [IMG]
