Early spuds.

    Good evening all Bob flemming here,
    ive been busy transforming my veggy patch with raised beds etc,and can't wait to get started,ive got loads more room,i think the reccesion brings out the vegatable growers in all of us:thmb:.

    Anyway i have my early spuds chitting away in my study,i have Arran pilot and pentland javelin if any of you are familliar.

    I have 3 plots that were well covered in horse **** last october,can anyone tell me whens the best time to plant out?i think i put mine out early april last year and had no problems,can you plant them out to early?

    A late frost can damage the young shoots Bob, but you can always protect with fleece if required.

    Or earth them up if frosts are predicted

    Or get up at 4.0am and water the frost off. I knew a Norfolk gardener who did that and watered 1/2 an acre before sunrise. It saved the crop.

    Start of April will be fine.
    First earlies take 9 or 10 weeks to crop, maincrop about 12-14 weeks.

    Dont plant them too early. If you really cant wait, plant some in a growbag in a frost free greenhouse mid march .
