Just to add, it is Phlomis russeliana and not Phlomis fruiticosa which is a shrub. Both are known as Jerusalem sage so the proper names are better to use.

The Phytolacca heads should be turning a lovely shiney purple black soon. Ours have already turned because of the drought. Both yours are likely to spread by root runs - Phlomis tend to run on the surface and Phyto tend to run fairly deep.

I find the bees prefer russeliana but it can be quite invasive whereas fruticosa is rather solitary and non-invasive. We have no trouble with the invasive bit as we have an outlet for them. We dig up what we don't want and chuck them straight into boxes and take them to a charity garden centre where they separate them, pot them and sell them. We've taken 30 boxes to them so far this year as we have five patches of them that we keep down to a 6ft diameter.

Thank you! Phlomis looks very interesting, I'm tempted to get some seeds from Chiltern's. :)

It's interesting to see them. The bees climb partway inside the flower by pushing the lid up with their body. They then just have their bums sticking out and Mrs Shiney loves stroking them (doesn't do that to me!) and they take no notice at all.
