I saw something about that on telly a while ago. I think its a cracking idea, and I wish it was pushed a bit more so that other towns may follow suit.

A few years ago, when I lived in a part of Sheffield that was officially declared to be 'deprived', a scheme was set up to turn a lot of the disused green spaces into communal orchards and herb gardens. I seem to remember I put my name down as a volunteer. It was to be funded by a massive grant from the EU. Sadly the project never happened. After spending about 10% of the grant money on regeneration projects, somebody in the committee decided to check what was left in the bank. Almost nowt.

But it would be great not only for health and the environment, but for community spirit, if more towns followed suit, and did what has been done in Todmorden.

That news report has to rate as the best I have read all this year, and with 2 weeks left in 2011, I do not think I will read anything better.

        Steve...:)

Must be a nice place to live, Anywhere else and the stuff would not even get to the seedling stage
Our town decided to create Allotments within the town,
The space was fenced off, by next morning the fences were lying broken

A week later the heavy machinery had been started up and driven like tanks then crashed

Eventually clean ploughed soil in fenced lots (chestnut fencing) within a couple of weeks the individual owners had a shed or greenhouse up
Within a week glass broken and tools stolen out of the sheds, one set on fire

It is still up and running after six months, but does not look very productive,

So full marks to a town that can successfully grow veg on roundabouts
          I applaud you

I thought the main problem with Todmorden was it's identity.
          Is it Yorkshire?
          Is it Lancashire?

          The eternal question!

We have embarked on a similar scheme in Middlesbrough. The produce from our plots will be sold to local people in a 'veg-box' scheme and through some retailers who have agreed to support the enterprise.
