    Hi :)

I need your advice on some lawn edging!

I am cutting away some of the turf in my back garden to make a bed for growing stuff alongside the edge of my garden path..I hope in time to plant it with lots of lavender.

I would like to place a definite edge between the soil and the grass so have been looking at edging.

I'm not keen on the plastic stuff (for purely aesthetic reasons) so have been looking at both the rolls of galvanised metal edging and woven willow edging hurdles.

My heart is with the woven willow (imagining how lovely that will look when the lavender is established) but I do have some concerns.

What is the longevity of the willow likely to be? It is the more expensive option and I need it to be long lasting.

Will mowing/strimming the grass damage it? bearing in mind that the edging will be between the grass and the plants not along the edge of the path iyswim?

    Any thoughts/experiences/opinions greatfully recieved!

I do, but I used it in a damp area of the garden and after a year it was rotting and falling apart. It does look lovely though and the stuff I used was very cheap so perhaps not best quality.

To be honest, whatever you use should get hidden by plants once they grow up and get established so I wouldn't fret about what to use too much.

Hi Hetty. my son in law purchased some edging last week from B@Q. this edging i have never seen before,i will try to describe the edging. its a LOG ROLL FINISH but it is made up in a solid section with 2 sharp posts on each end to hammer into the ground. it is very robust solid wood it would withstand weather and your lawn mower hitting it. it is a natural wood colour which can be stained to your specifications if required. if i remember ,the sections are about 4 foot long x 1 foot high.
i do not know the size of the area you are covering but it comes in @ £8.50 a section.
in the past i have used plastic edging and it was a waste of time and money .the plastic has all gone now ,i have a heavy duty LOG ROLL and its great .you can take your mower in as close as you can get then just pull out any grass which has grown between the LOG ROLL.
hope this is a help to you. best of luck music:cool:

Thank you very much both for your replies :thumb:

I have plumped for the galvanised edging in the end, although music I have used the log roll out in the front garden and it looks lovely there :)

It worked out at just over £30 for 20 metres, so more expensive than the plastic but a lot less expensive than the willow would have been, and hopefully longer lasting..I loved the willow but just couldn't take the chance.

Hi Hetty, have you found an online supplier for the galvanised edging, I can only find plastic. Thanks Ron

    Hi Maltaron :)

I ordered it online from Primrose of London, they should have been £9.99 for a 5mtr roll but if you ordered 3 or more (I needed 4) the price was £7.50 each..£4.95 for delivery..I ordered yesterday came this afternoon...can't be bad!

    God bless, Hetty x
