found this egg in a rose bush. Been left for a few days. Just wondering what type of egg it might be? Any eggsperts?

Compared to a hen egg... IMG_8471.JPG

Could it be a duck egg? Had a muscovy duck wandering around a couple of weeks ago, but the farmers either side of us have hens (but never seen them sround the garden).

In the comparison photograph they look to be the same size. Duck eggs are usually larger.
The colour might suggest a duck egg, but I have hens which lay the same colour eggs as that one.
Muscovy duck eggs are whiter than your one.

The only way to know for sure is to open it: the shell will be thicker than a chicken egg and a duck egg tastes different to hen eggs.

Oohs i'll crack it open. Wonder if its edible or gone off??? I shone a light through it and couldnt see any veins etc so hopefully its not fertilised.

Could quite well be a pheasant as got loads about!

Found this but now I'm more confused as it could be a Mallard and we have those around too.

Well the shell was quite thick...not as easy to crack as a chicken egg. It was fertilised but only slightly developed as the dot was bigger than an unfertilised egg. Smells a bit "pond watery" if you get what I mean.

I guess we'll never know....unless I see one in the act!!

We also have a peacock and a couple of pea hens too but they wouldn't have been able to get under the rose bush as it's too small. Lol.

There was only one egg....would that make a difference to what it could be?

@Snorky85 the photo you put up of the different types of eggs says it is from the University of Nebraska (Lincoln)so their pheasant eggs might be a different colour to the pheasant eggs you get in this country which I have always found to be of an olive green shade when I found them as a youngster wandering over the fields:biggrin:
