Pete. Meant to ask you. Can you over-winter a largish strelitzia in an unheated greenhouse or do you still need the old candle lit?

Just another EU directive to ensure we are safe in our beds.
Electricians have to gain a certificate to tell us they can wire a plug and have the written proof, then charge even more than before.
I have just had my house rewired because it was about to explode and burn the entire shire of Worcester to the ground! All I wanted was a new socket fitted.. [IMG] But at least the County is safe thank goodness [IMG]

I'm similar Pal. Wanted a new socket. In came the first electrician. 'Your kitchen has to be on a different ring from your hall now. I'd better call my boss.' I am, honestly, now on my ninth 'consultant' electrician, The last one announced that Part P is wonderful because it makes us so safe, and by the way, he is an inspector (paid) for Part P and fails 20% of all his inspections. Oh also my upstairs earth ring needs re-doing.....AAAAARGH.

Just wait until they get round to fitting a new fuse box!...They are so sensitive that when next door turns over in bed your trip switch goes off!!
Then you will have to replace each 'white' appliance until things balance and remain stable...or failing that, the neighbour moves out.. :D :D

I too will at some stage be putting electricity in my greenhouse(when it gets errected). The way I see it, as long as I have an RCD device and it has been wired by someone competant, that`ll do for me. Cheers...freddy.

If you keep it pretty dry I think you might get away with it in your area John.
I'd just keep some fleece handy for the odd really cold night, and perhaps the candle or two if we should get an arctic blast.
As you know, it only takes a few hours of real cold to wipe out years of growth on such plants, which is the annoying part about growing in the UK.
These plants can get by pretty well for about 340 days of the year, its the other 25 that are the problem.

Thanks mate. It's taken over the living room this winter and so next year (although I don't want heat all winter because of other plants being dormant) I think it has to go in the g.house.
