This was the data issued by EDF energy in their letter a few days ago.
Our house is totally electricity and we cannot change from EDF.
You will see that they predict a 41.4% increase in our charge for the year 1/4/2019 to 31/3/2020. This due to the lifting of the price cap.
I understand the main suppliers of our country's gas and electricity are issuing similar rises.
I have a reduced State pension and a smallish Civic Service pension - both have increased my weekly rate by 2.4% for the same year .
It is very worrying to acknowledge this variance and it will effect how much money I can spend quite significantly over the next year.
An increase of this magnitude is OUTRAGEOUS surely?
Many people will get into debt over this increase and I would like your thoughts on it please as I'm sure it will effect other GC members just as hard as it will effect me.
But what can we do about it?

Tis funny, our last bill went down because of the price cap, next bill will go up 10% in April, Is this anything to do with MP's meddling

What's wrong with, its cost xxx too produce + some for profit etc = price we pay

We have a 125 year lease but we do not own the property. The freeholder some 29 years ago got a deal from the energy supplier at the time . It was a 4 way meter reading deal which gives us 2 hours extra in the afternoon at an off peak rate . A bargain then but not anymore but we cannot alter the meter from a 4 way reading to a normal 3 way reading. It would be classed as structural alteration to their property and we wouldn't be granted permission . It would also be very costly to carry out anyway.

I sympathise, Jenny. We're with EDF and the bills have gone through the roof over the last 12 years. What really pees me off is that the actual consumption is a fraction of the total bill. There is the standing charge and then 3 other 'contributions' added with the connivance of various governments. Then VAT on these taxes! Obviously their way of wriggling round the cap on energy prices themselves. When you know that ALL EDF employees, past and present, enjoy heavily subsidised energy bills, then it becomes apparent just who is subsidising their perks. Then there'll be the cost of the new Linky meters......it's probably a good time for looking into going off-grid!

Our prices go up twice a year - when the clocks change. Maybe they think because our sleep pattern is interrupted we won't notice!

We pay $1.06 per KWH at mid peak. That's 62p per.

Cost me more than that to p at Covent Gardens :heehee:

And today Edf announce they want to restart Hunterston B nuclear station despite it crumbling at the core. 370 odd cracked tiles that hold the reactor together.:runforhills:

(EDF; Electricity of France) is a French electric utility company, largely owned by the French state.

Hi @Jenny namaste not to worry sorry I can't be of any more use in answering your original dilemma my friend:smile:

                      E.ON
E.ON is a German-owned group formed from the merger of German companies VEBA and VIAG. The group bought UK energy company Powergen back in 2002 but it wasn’t until 2007 that its UK energy operations were renamed E.ON.

                      British Gas
However, British Gas is actually a subsidiary of Centrica, which was formed following a demerger from British Gas plc back in 1997.

                      Centrica is UK-owned and based.

                      Npower
Npower is a subsidiary of German energy company RWE Group. It was bought in 2002, having evolved out of National Power, later renamed npower, which had bought the likes of Calortex, Independent Energy and Midlands Electricity following privatisation.

                      ScottishPower
ScottishPower is a subsidiary of Spanish company Iberdrola, who bought it in 2006. The company was formed in 1990 from the South of Scotland Electricity Board. It later bought Manweb, the energy company supplying Merseyside and North Wales.

                      SSE
SSE (formerly known as Scottish and Southern Energy) was formed in 1998 following the merger of Scottish Hydro Electric and Southern Electric.

In 2000, it bought SWALEC and it also owns Atlantic and Airtricity. It operates those brands plus Scottish Hydro and Southern Electric as subsidiaries of the main SSE group.

Just a thought @Jenny namaste and @noisette47. I wonder if your electricity suppliers will have to change after Brexit?

Jenny it's worth speaking to your freeholder to see if a change is possible.

The irony of living here in the Highlands is that the hydro power electricity produced here is transferred to England and then sold back to us. We are paying the highest rate in Britain for it!

My own electricity is supplied through E.ON at the moment.

I can't believe how cheap my gas and leccy are with Together Energy compared to what I'd be paying with Scottish Power had I stayed with them.

Might be worth asking for a smart meter and getting edf to contact the freeholder. Edf will do almost anything to get a smart meter into a property.

Smart meters are wonderful for the energy providers. How else will they be able in the future, to charge us a higher rate, for power at "peak periods?"
