I have very kindly been given some "Elephant Garlic" pips/bulbils:yho: ,I know they will be 2 years before they are big enough to harvest.

What do i do meanwhile, should i plant them in position for the next 2 years now, or wait until later in the year :gnthb:

Pam, I bought some elephant garlic to grow for the first time last year, so I'm no expert, but I was informed to plant them in Oct. Mine are enomorous now and I'm hoping they will be ready to eat in the next month. So I would say wait till Sept/Oct to plant yours - you never know you might get something edible by next year.

Hi Pam we have just harvested the Elephant Garlic that Mr K planted out as cloves last October from the two large bulbs that we bought from The Garlic Farm on the Isle of Wight na dgot all our garlic from their on line ordering service. They sent all the bulbs out in labled paper bags in a large flat box with all the instructions on how to grow them.

All our plants suffred with Garlic rust a problem that seems to be prevailant with growing garlic and we had about four of the bulbs rot in the ground, two of them were ones we bought seperatley from a garden centre so won't be buying those ones again. They probably came from infected stock.

I have got some of those large Bulbils from off of our Elephant garlic and was wondering when we have to plant them out.

I should take yours out of the zip lock bag or else they might rot if they become sweaty and I would put them in a paper bag somewhere dry until you come to plant the cloves.Don't forget where you put them though.Mr K thought he had planted out all of ours because some had to be left until the Spring to before he could plant them out because of the variety but missed one of the bulbs and I only found it in the shed in the box the other week and all the cloves had shrivelled to nothing:dh::(

I got my Elephant Garlic from the same place as Kandy, except I bought them as eaters rather than the more expensive seed bulbs. A couple of them I split up and planted, so far they have been rust free, must have got lucky for once.
